Transforming the world through each sphere of society
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Building relationships with my students that go beyond the classroom. I have had opportunities to know them personally and also share from my life!
What is a challenge or difficulty you face at work?
Seeing students graduate and leave is difficult, given the years I spent building a relationship with them. It is exciting to start fresh again with a new batch, but I’ll definitely miss my students.
During lessons, it’s definitely tough when students aren’t cooperative to learn or have a bad attitude when learning.
How do you see that the Gospel is or could be transforming your workplace?
I’ve had opportunities to share from my life personally or even speak to why I came back to Hong Kong. Since my students are on social media, they get a snapshot of the things that I do during the week. I can see the Gospel being able to impact students by providing a safe space for them when they come in for lessons, or to affirm them in knowing that their value and worth is not dependent on their grades.
What is one piece of advice you would give to those that will enter the workplace in the future?
As a teacher, you have a lot of platform to speak into student’s lives, especially as someone who’s gone ahead. I think it’s important to gain their trust and respect as both a friend and teacher, and to be honest about your life with them as well!
