What do you enjoy most about your work?

Since I am mainly working as a trainee right now, I do a bit of everything in the information and technology field. However, what I enjoy the most about my work is doing process improvement by leveraging the technology around me. Doing so not only increases the product quality but also mainly improves people’s life because of increased efficiency and people can actually start to focus on the things that matter instead of dealing with routine or repetitive tasks. As a Christian, it is our calling to have a positive impact to the people around us and I’m thankful I am able to do that through my workplace.

What is a challenge or difficulty you face at work?

The biggest challenge for me at work is to discern which critics or feedback are valid for my growth. There are many feedback out there that are based on the secular view or simply someone else’s opinion and often times I feel tempted to fit in and “go with the flow”. It is a challenge to be able to stand true to your beliefs and values when there are many external noises that try to stir you away from your principles.

How do you see that the Gospel is or could be transforming your workplace?

I believe having the Gospel in the workplace would definitely change people’s perspective in the way they see their work. I think most people at my workplace or even in Hong Kong in general attach their worth and hope to their career. When work situation does not go as expected, people tend to fall into depression or anger and even create relational conflicts with other coworkers. With Gospel in place, hope is put in God’s promises and humility will naturally be produced in the workplace. Work will not be something that we do anymore merely to fulfill our basic needs and satisfy our selfish desires. Instead, it will be a platform for us to worship God and be a blessing to other people.

What is one piece of advice you would give to those that will enter the workplace in the future?

I think it is very easy for anyone who is just starting out a career to treat his/her job as the center of his/her life. When everyone around you competes to be the best, you will have the tendency to prove yourself as well. It is very important to know that your career should not take the front seat in your life. Otherwise it would be a shaky foundation that will always set you up for disappointment because your work will never satisfy your worth and desire. Put God into the picture, weave Him into your workplace, and don’t make God and your working life into two separate dimensions because He should always be at the center of our lives. He is the only ONE that can supplement us with hope and strength as we go through trials and difficulties.
